About The Club

I have been thinking about starting a book group for a few years now, and the most important part, to me anyways, is having a core group of intelligent, wonderful women to have a great time sharing our ideas and excellent books with. In our busy lives as moms, juggling jobs, houses, husbands, life, etc. it is very easy to lose the connections we have to other interests and friends. It is my hope that this club will help us find some time for ourselves and time to hang out with other smart women!
  • The group consist of a core group of  6-9  women (we want to keep it small so there are not as many schedules to coordinate)
  • The reading requirement is one book per two months. You need to do your very best to finish the book during the two month period designated for that book. Since the point of this group is reading, this is a pretty big requirement. Please only join if you are committed to the reading requirement.
  • We will meet once every two months, hosting duties will revolve with each person only having to host once a season.
  • What does it mean to host?   Each month a different person hosts, and provides food/dessert/wine
  •  It is usually about a 3-hour affair.  First hour, talk, catch up and connect, start eating. Second hour finish eating, start talking about the book.  Third hour, finish talking about the book, discuss next meeting. This set up makes it so only one person has to stress out instead of all of us, and that responsibility rotates.
  • At the end of the season, each member gets to recommit or choose to end their commitment to the club.
  • Between the next to last, and last book club meeting of the previous season, each member will choose three books. The three books will be put up on this website for voting.
  • Books will be selected by majority vote, and in the case of a tie, the member who has chosen those books will get to be the tie breaker.

Ryka Aoki: I respect both science fiction and fantasy, but I had honest intentions and reasons to mix them in  Light from Uncommon Stars . I was a little bit worried about how people would accept this—or not. But I’ve been thrilled with how readers have embraced and accepted this book. I think this book might resonate with readers because we  all  hold seeming contradictions. In the book, Shizuka Satomi mentions how great pieces of music contain such different-sou...
